We will be looking at watercolor artists, and writing a reflection in our DWBs in class while experimenting with watercolor! 10/27 and 10/28: Analyze Artist Instructions for Scratchboard project: 1. Description (It answers the question, "What do you see?") Pure description of the object without value judgments (Elements of Art) List what you can see in this artwork. Objects, figures, colors, shapes, objects, background, etc. Imagine you are describing it to a blind person. Do this in as much detail as possible and use art terms. 2. Analyze (It answers the question, "How did the artist do it?") Determining what the features suggest and deciding why the artist used such features to convey specific ideas. Composition (organization of shapes)
3: Interpretation (It answers the question, "What is the artist trying to say? What is going on in the picture")
Condense these questions into three paragraphs on one page, with your visuals. Not all questions may pertain to the piece of artwork you decide to react to. Use the DWB Guide to Success to help format your page. This should be on your Scratchboard Artist Inspiration Page. 10/23 and 10/24: Negative Space Assignment for your DWB and Scratchboard Assignment completed in class! Remember to have your photograph printed and READY to use in class next week, either Monday or Tuesday! Helpful hints for finding a copyright free image online Your Value Study Project and LP Project are due at the end of the upcoming week--don't procrastinate! If you are completing the cultural compare/contrast, be sure to have it complete by the end of the week as well. 10/22 Scratchboard Presentation 10/20 and 10/21 White Charcoal on Black Paper Practice Assignment for Scratch board Project. 9/25/2014 and 9/26/2014 Elements and Principles Photo Project! Students are learning about the 10 Rules of Composition, and using them as a framework to take 10 photographs incorporating a variety of the elements and principles of art. Project Instructions: Each student has access to DSLR cameras at school for two class periods. Everyone is responsible for taking 10 photos, one for every rule of composition. Students must plan out each photo using a rule of composition, as well as a minimum of one element and one principle per photo. Students will upload these photos onto Macbooks, and print them to place in their DWB. Under each photo in the DWB, a written description and justification of these three mandatory features must be pasted. Pages need to adhere to the DWB Guide to Success Format. Grading Rubrics will be provided on Wednesday, as students begin building the DWB pages. 9/22/2014 and 9/23/2014 Students were given gradation practice sheets and were able to select a value study option. 4th period students were not able to watch this documentary excerpt in class due to school photos being taken. All other periods watched it in class. Documentary Excerpt: Jeff Koons DWB Assignment: On page 11 (or your next available page) please create an artist reaction to Jeff Koons. Pick one or two of his pieces, print and paste them in your DWB and answer the following questions to write an artist reaction: 1. 2. Condense these questions into three paragraphs on one page, with your visuals. Not all questions may pertain to the piece of artwork you decide to react to. Use the DWB Guide to Success to help format your page. Due on Friday at the end of class (pasted in your DWB). 9/11/2014 and 9/12/2014 Students were introduced to the first major art assignment of the year! They will be creating magazine cover self portraits. The details of the project can be seen here. This project is due at the end of class on 9/18 or 9/19. 9/08/2014 and 9/09/2014 Students learned about the elements and principles of design, took notes and placed these notes in their DWBs. Magazines were available for students to select photos from that exhibit the elements and principles. The Elements and Principles presentation can be viewed here. 9/02/2014 and 9/03/2014 Students completed a contour drawing of their hand holding an object and turned it in. MYP Art command terms were checked by Mrs. Rudd! 9/02/2014 and 9/03/2014 Students went outside with viewfinders and drew 3D objects in the courtyard and gardens. Students had practice time for 3D objects in hands, as this is the drawing that they will complete and turn in later in the week. Homework: Please see this Document! MYP Art Terms This will be checked in class on 9/4 or 9/5. 8/27/2014 and 8/28/2014 Students practiced drawing three dimensional forms through a viewfinder, then transferred this drawing to paper. 8/25/2014 and 8/26/2014 Students discussed interesting Paleolithic Art facts they discovered doing independent research over the weekend. We learned through an interactive presentation many of the foundational ideas centered around Paleolithic art and cave paintings, and students had the opportunity to create their own cave paintings in class. We participated in this virtual tour of the Lascaux Cave in France. DWB Work/Homework: On Page 9, Notes from our discussion and lesson should be presented using the DWB Guide to Success format. On Page 10, Please create 3-5 sketches of what YOU as an artist would want your "Paleolithic Cave Painting" to communicate about you today! What would you want people to understand about your life, what is important to you personally and culturally? Your sketches should have small explanations. Include a reflection or reaction on this page about the interesting facts you've learned about Paleolithic artwork, your experience painting like a Paleolithic artist and be sure to use the DWB Guide to Success format. These pages are due 8/28-8/29. 8/21/2014 and 8/22/2014 DWB Checklist was provided and discussed at length in class. Students created upside down drawings after Picasso to further the spatial/observational stamina in their brains! Homework: Make sure you are completing your Title Page, Artist Bio Page, Table of Contents and Learner Profile Artist #1! Come to class next week with 3 Conversation Starters about Paleolithic Art. (3 interesting facts that you don't think anyone else will come up with). Start your research by looking here. You don't HAVE to write them down, but it is probably smart to do so! 8/18/2014 and 8/19/2014 Students learned about the visual/spatial and creative brain mode needed to observe and draw. We practiced switching to this brain mode in class by watching this video. Students drew expressive lines, contour and blind contour drawings, switched to the visual spatial mode with VASE/FACE and Upside Down Drawing Activities. Homework: Make sure your BLU reflection is complete by the end of class on Wednesday! Continue working on your DWB pages and the LP Artist Assignment #1. 8/14/2014 and 8/15/2014 Students created their artwork portfolios (the place where artwork will be stored in the classroom throughout the year). Students also participated in a Visual Communication Activity, See Run Draw! We viewed the artwork Combo: Collaboration by BLU and David Ellis and discussed how the idea of communication worked in this piece. Homework: Write a reflection or reaction to the piece Combo: Collaboration by BLU and David Ellis in your DWB on Page 8. Be sure to cite sources if you refer to any information or include a picture! 8/13/2014 First DWB Assignments and Deadlines given. Students need to begin working on the inside cover page, title page and artist bio page. August's LP Artist assignment was discussed as well! 8/11/2014 and 8/12/2014 Students are able to view and define art as a form of communication, and then practice internal and external communication skills by drawing observationally and collaborating with classmates to create a visual story using paintings, photography and written words. Students need to bring the parental syllabus receipt back to class, signed and dated on 8/15/2014. |
